Civil Code - art. 515-14

Recognizes that animals are sentient living beings, although they remain subject to the regime of goods.

Rural Code - Book II, Title 1
(including the famous art. L-214-1)

Set animal protection rules: compulsory care, prohibition of ill-treatment, obligations of owners.

Criminal Code - art. 521-1

Punishes serious abuse, acts of cruelty, voluntary abandonment (up to 5 years of imprisonment and 75,000€ fine).

Environmental code

Law no. 2021-1539 of 30 November 2021

Strengthens the fight against animal abuse: end of the sale of puppies/kittens in pet stores, certificate of commitment, etc.

Washington Convention (CITES)

International treaty to regulate trade in endangered wildlife. Protects more than 30,000 animal (and plant) species, by prohibiting or strictly regulating their import, export or possession.
